About Charades for Couples

Charades is the rare party game that works just as well with two people as with ten. One of you holds the phone against your forehead so only the other can see the screen, and they have sixty seconds to get you to say as many words as possible, acting, describing, humming, anything except saying the word itself. Because it is timed and physical, charades breaks the pattern of sitting across from each other on the couch. The words here are chosen for couples specifically: shared rituals, rom-com tropes, date-night scenes and the small domestic things only the two of you would recognise. On a phone you can score without touching the screen, tilt down when they get it, tilt up to skip, so nobody has to break character.

Why couples love this game

Psychologists find that novel, playful experiences release dopamine and rebuild attraction in long-term relationships. Charades works because it creates a structured excuse to ask things you'd normally skip, and laugh at the answers together. A handful of prompts is often enough to turn a regular Tuesday into a real date night.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play charades with just two people?+
One of you holds the phone to your forehead so only your partner can see the word. They have sixty seconds to get you to say it, acting, describing or making sounds, but never saying the word or anything that rhymes with it. When you guess right, tilt the phone down. To skip, tilt it up. Then swap.
Do I need to install anything?+
No. It runs in your browser on any phone, tablet or laptop. On a phone you also get tilt-to-score, which means you never have to touch the screen mid-round.
Why is tilting not working on my phone?+
iPhones ask for permission before a website can read motion, so tap Enable tilt when the game offers it. Safari also only allows motion on secure pages. If tilt is unavailable for any reason the on-screen Got it and Skip buttons do exactly the same thing.
How many words are there?+
72, grouped into date night, everyday domestic moments, romance, rom-com tropes, emotions and objects. Each round shuffles, so you rarely see the same run twice.
Can we play this on a video call?+
Yes. Share your screen and let your partner see the word while you act it out on camera, or read the word to yourself and describe it out loud. It works well for long distance.
